The primary school at Kone Myint Thar Yor village educates 65 local children and seven other surrounding villages. We recently funded the construction of a new school building with our local partner, the Lahu Women Organisation. In 2011 heavy rains caused severe flooding in Cambodia which affected hundreds of thousands of families and many villages were in a state of emergency. We were able to help these families with emergency food and seeds for fast growing vegetables and rice. Full Details
In April 2012 heavy rainfall badly damaged the roofs on the boys and girls dormitories. As a result water began leaking into the dormitories and the 21 children had to sleep in wet and unhealthy conditions. Thanks to one of our generous sponsors we were able to co-fund the renovations of both dormitories, ensuring that the children continued to live in a healthy environment. Full Details

Two children with Down Syndrome, Yig (7) and Siouw (5) were growing up in a poor hill tribe community where proper care was inaccessible. They now live in the fitting and stimulating environment of a home for children with special needs. They live there with other children of the same age and with similar cognitive disabilities. In 2015 the number of students that enrolled in the beginning English class at TVLC exceeded the classroom capacity, resulting in over 20 students squeezed into a small room. We secured funds from one of our sponsors to extend the classroom and fund their other urgent needs. Full Details

Public areas inside the Koung Jor Shan Refugee Camp depend on electricity including the IT and English classrooms and street lights over the camp’s dirt roads. We were able to support the price increase ensuring the evening classes continued running and the dirt roads were well lit ensuring better safety for adults and children. Full Details

In October, food support was cut off by another aid organisation to more than 6.000 Shan refugees living in six different camps - including our partner, Koung Jor Shan Refugee Camp (KJSRC). However, thanks to the continued generosity of our sponsors, especially the Brodtbeck Philanthropy Foundation, we are able to help out with the food shortage in KJSRC, by providing food as needed until funding is restored. Tomato Village Learning Center offers English lessons to children ages six to 18. Most of these children belong to Burmese migrant or ethnic minorities, which puts them at a disadvantaged position in society. Proficiency in the English language will give these children better job opportunities and with that comes improved livelihood options. Full Details
An English language programme is running for orphans and children living in Piang Luang village. Students learn language skills that will give them the opportunity to further their education at a vocational training centre or tertiary institution and increase their job options. Full Details
Every year, Yig, Siouw and their friends, leave the centre where they are being cared for, to go day tripping. In 2011, this yearly outing was almost cancelled due to a € 100 (!) shortage. A large flood hit Chiang Mai which forced the caretakers and children of Bahn Ruam Jai, a safe haven, to evacuate to the second floor of the building for four days. The RICD Wheelchair Project faced a serious challenge as staff depended on the availability of hospital vehicles to distribute wheelchairs to remote areas. We were able to secure funds to purchase a van that has been modified into a mobile work unit and now delivers wheelchairs and mobility aids throughout Thailand, parts of Laos, Burma and Malaysia. The Thai government sees Koung Jor Shan Refugee camp as a temporary solution and electricity is only supplied to public areas of the camp. We were able to provide six families with solar panels for their huts, so they could continue with their activities at night. Full Details

A young child slipped on the wet and muddy stairs at the Tomato Village Learning Center. Fortunately this time nothing serious happened.
