  • Summary

Since 2012, PCF has been supporting the running costs of the boarding house, which has provided disadvantaged children with shelter, support, and the opportunity to pursue education. In 2023, PCF supported 27 children residing in a Boarding House who were orphans, half-orphans, or children from impoverished families unable to care for them. The Boarding House offers education and provides a safe and enhanced living environment for the children.

The girls' dormitory, standing for over a decade, shows significant wear on the roof, resulting in frequent leaks. The designated area for drying clothes lacks adequate roofing. Insufficient ventilation within the dormitory poses challenges for the 12 girls accommodated there. Additionally, the kitchen countertop's height and narrowness make it impractical for larger kitchen appliances such as pans, pots, or rice cookers. Furthermore, the doors to the toilets, bathrooms, and kitchen are all in disrepair. The toilet sewage system is also experiencing issues and requires repairs.

The project aims to address the structural deficiencies and improve the overall safety and comfort of the dormitory, ensuring that the students have a conducive environment for their education and personal development

  • Background

Koung Jor Shan Refugee Camp (KJSRC) is located on the Thai-Myanmar border in Piang Luang Sub-district, Wiang Haeng District, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. Formed in 2002 amidst conflicts between Burmese military troops and the Shan State Army, the camp lacks recognition from the Thai government and isn't registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The camp offers a boarding house for the children, which provides an environment that is as close to a normal family life as possible for up to 30 children.  The children attend local Thai schools and learn English, Shan, Burmese, and computer skills at the camp in the evenings. Without the boarding house, the chances of these children developing into independent, healthy and educated adults are very slim, especially in an environment known for high levels of child exploitation and trafficking.

  • Goals and Results

The project undertaken at Koung Jor Shan Refugee Camp successfully achieved its objectives and made significant strides in enhancing the living conditions, basic needs and safety of the children residing in the boarding house.

Despite challenges encountered during implementation, the outcomes achieved underscored the importance of continued support and investment in initiatives aimed at improving the well-being of vulnerable populations. Moving forward, sustained efforts were crucial to maintaining and building upon the positive changes achieved, ensuring a brighter future for the children of the boarding house.
