Summary

One of our endeavours is to support promising and motivated youngsters who pursue further education to improve their own chances in life and help their families and their community. In 2020 our partner told us about 5 motivated students who have been given the opportunity to study in quality schools in and around the Thai-Burma area. However, these families of these students have no opportunity to raise the funds to cover the additional living expenses which are not covered by the school.

The authorities required the closure of all educational institutions for two months from March 2020, thus delaying the school year until May 2020. During this time, students were expected to return to their home villages but many were not able to do so – their homes are up to 48 hours travel away across the border, which was closed. We also found emergency funding to support these students during this time.

The initial project has now expanded in 2021 to cover 10 students, all desperately needing support for living expenses to continue their studies.

The Wide Horizons school was established with the mission to build the capacity of young adults from Myanmar to work effectively in civil society organisations. Saw Moo Kaw Hsar, a 21-year-old student from Kyaukyi Township, Bago district, is recently graduated from the Wide Horizons Organisational Development programme.

He had been working for an educational non-profit organisation. He mentioned that our scholarship had helped him a lot in his studies, allowing him not to worry about school fees and giving him the opportunity to complete this programme. He shared this message with us:

β€œI would like to be a good leader in my community and guide the people to improve their standard of living. I am very keen on studying at Wide Horizons to learn about Community Development, improve my English skills, and enhance my Computer skills.

I believe that I can develop myself to pursue my dream. There are no computer classes or English classes available in my hometown. After completing the programme at Wide Horizons, I will return to my home to establish an educational training programme that is essential for youths and children.

I am determined to elevate the standard of living in my community, as children are forced to work hard for low wages even at a young age. I am committed to becoming a capable leader who can guide the young people to achieve their best potential.”

Thanks to our sponsors, Anneke and Martin van der Meulen who kindly support 9 students and Bert Cesar for his support of 4 other students, Saw Moo Kaw Hsar and 12 other students can now pursue their dreams.

We’re pleased and heartened that the eleven scholarships at Wide Horizon’s leadership and professional education programme have now been fully funded. This vital programme takes in aspiring youths from local civil society organisations in Myanmar and along the Thai-Myanmar border, equipping them with the skills to work more effectively to develop their own communities.

A big thank you to the Lorraine Seelig Memorial Scholarship for funding ten students. This scholarship, created by the Seelig family, honors the memory of their beloved Lorraine. Also, a heartfelt thank you to Alet Koets Achterberg for generously funding one student in this programme.
