The renovation process included painting the interior and exterior walls and engaging villagers and students' guardians during their free afternoons from 7 January to 27 February 2023. Villagers extended the classroom balcony in front and on the side of the building and other, skilled villagers connected electricity to the building, installing essential components such as a counter, contact, extension with a switcher socket, circuit breaker, three fans, and three light bulbs from 12 to 24 January 2023. KAKO also provided materials for repairing the toilet roof and crafting a class name sign.
Despite minor delays, the renovation was completed in time for the scheduled opening of the community preschool and stands as a testament to the resilience and collaboration of the villagers. Presently, 29 students benefit from a fully renovated classroom building, providing a conducive environment for early childhood education.
Khmer Akphiwat Khmer Organisation (KAKO), in response to a request from the Takam community, had planned to establish a community preschool class, focusing on the transformation of an old building belonging to the organisation "About Asia" located in Takam village, Puok District, Siem Reap, Cambodia. This building was earmarked to serve as a community preschool class and was scheduled to open in early January 2023. Engaging with the village committees and residents, a consensus was reached to repurpose Takam's community preschool learning centre for this purpose. However, a renovation effort was initiated in November 2022, led by the village leader and committees, where skilled villagers began repairing the roof area of the classroom. The village contributed funds and materials, but additional support was needed to complete the renovation, including connecting electricity, painting the walls and repairing the toilet roof.
Facing a shortfall in funds, KAKO sought financial assistance from the Philanthropy Connections Foundation (PCF) to ensure the timely completion of the renovation before the planned start of the preschool in January 2023. The primary objectives of the renovation included preventing sunlight and rainwater infiltration, improving the overall appeal of the classroom, and ensuring a well-lit and comfortable learning environment.
KAKO anticipated that the community's involvement in financial contributions and labour would instil a sense of ownership and commitment, fostering sustained support for educational initiatives in Takam village. This project not only addressed the immediate need for a community preschool class but also nurtured community collaboration, paving the way for a brighter educational future for the children of Takam village.
