  • Summary

The Humanitarian Response and Urban Refugees project, coordinated by Friends Without Borders (FWB) with support from Philanthropy Connections Foundation (PCF), provided crucial assistance to refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by the conflict along the Thailand-Myanmar border. In 2023, the project delivered essential aid, including food, medical supplies, and shelter materials, while also supporting education and development for urban refugees.

The initiative addressed the urgent needs of those displaced by conflict, ensuring vital resources reached over 13.000 individuals throughout the year.

  • Background

Since the military coup in Myanmar in February 2021, Friends Without Borders (FWB) and Philanthropy Connections Foundation (PCF) have been working together to provide vital humanitarian assistance to refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) along the Thailand-Myanmar border. This assistance includes medical supplies, food, and other essential resources for those fleeing persecution by the Myanmar military.

FWB and PCF’s intervention is particularly significant as larger humanitarian agencies often face bureaucratic delays, leaving critical gaps in aid delivery. In response, FWB has taken a swift, flexible approach to reach those most in need, particularly babies, children, pregnant women, the elderly, and the disabled—groups often neglected in large-scale relief efforts.

As the conflict and displacement continued, it became clear that the crisis would be prolonged. FWB adjusted its strategy to not only address immediate needs but also support longer-term development, focusing on education and well-being for displaced populations.

  • Goals and Results

Immediate Humanitarian Aid: To provide essential food, medical supplies, and shelter materials to refugees and IDPs, with a focus on supporting the most vulnerable members of the displaced communities, including children, elderly individuals, and those with specific health needs.

Support for Urban Refugees: To assist urban refugee families, particularly by addressing their educational needs through school fee support, provision of food packages, and case referrals for those in particularly difficult circumstances.
