  • Summary

Friends Without Borders (FWB) Foundation, a non-profit organisation established in 1999 and registered as a non-profit in Thailand in 2008. FWB produces alternative media to promote human rights and equality for ethnic minorities, refugees, and displaced people living in Thailand. FWB also engages in capacity building for these groups along the Thailand-Myanmar border

Following the Myanmar military coup on 1 February 2021, government schools were closed to suppress opposition. However, schools in the Karen National Union (KNU) area, managed by the Karen Education and Culture Department (KECD), remained open. Consequently, Karen students from various divisions sought education under the SchoolPower project.

To address the increased student influx, the FWB, with PCF's support, launched the Thoo Mwe Community School - Food for Dormitory Students project. This initiative provided three meals daily to 35 dormitory children from June 2021 to March 2022. Due to ongoing conflicts, PCF extended funding for the programme from August 2022 to April 2024, ensuring continued food support and education for internally displaced students affected by the coup and fighting in Myanmar.

  • Background

Since October 2018, with PCF's support, FWB has been running the Capacity Building for Border Karen Schools & Teachers project in Karen State, Myanmar. This programme, renamed 'SchoolPower' for better recognition, is a cooperative initiative between FWB and the local Karen Education and Cultural Department (KECD, formerly KED). The project aims to improve the quality of life and well-being of Karen children in the targeted areas and to serve as a model for similar efforts in other border regions in the future. The project also aims to foster community relations, and support the well-being of children and community members. In 2023, the project targeted 11 schools and communities.

  • Goals and Results

Overall, from August 2022 to April 2024, FWB provided food support to Thoo Mwe Community High School, Kaw La Hey School, and Waw Kyaw School, benefiting 103 students and 12 teachers.
