  • Background

The Educational Support for Than Taung Gyi Internally Displaced Persons (TTG - IDPs) project was launched in response to escalating violence following Myanmar’s military coup, which displaced thousands of people from Karenni State. Over 10,000 individuals sought refuge in the Than Taung Gyi (TTG) IDP camp, where children's education was severely disrupted. Many children were unable to attend school, leading to social issues such as early marriage, drug addiction, and depression. Recognising the critical need for education, Philanthropy Connections Foundation (PCF), in partnership with the Lahu Women's Organisation (LWO), began providing educational support to help these children resume their schooling and restore hope for a better future.

  • Summary

The project delivers educational assistance to 199 children in the TTG IDP camp, covering the salaries of three teachers, school materials, transportation, and other operational costs. The curriculum includes core subjects such as Burmese, English, Mathematics, and Social Studies, alongside life skills and creative activities. In addition to educational support, the project also addresses the food and shelter needs of 140 IDP families. Its objective is to keep children engaged in learning, reduce the risks of drug use and depression, and equip them with the skills needed for future opportunities.

  • Goals and Results

Goals: The project aims to provide stable education for displaced children, enhance literacy, and promote personal development amidst ongoing conflict. It also seeks to provide food and shelter support to the most vulnerable IDP families.

Results: In 2023, the project successfully supported 199 students and provided stipends for three teachers. Thirty students completed Grade 4, with 16 advancing to Grade 5 at a nearby school. Additionally, 70 bags of rice and 50 shelters were distributed to 140 families, despite significant challenges such as military restrictions and food shortages.
