  • Background

The Rice Support to Lahu IDPs in Lashio project was launched to provide emergency relief to internally displaced persons (IDPs) impacted by ongoing conflict in Northern Shan State, Myanmar. Clashes between the Burmese military and various ethnic armed groups forced over 7,000 individuals to flee their villages across the region. Around 960 IDPs, including children, women, and people with disabilities, sought refuge in the Lahu IDP camp in Lashio. Faced with severe food shortages, the Lahu Women’s Organisation (LWO) urgently appealed for support to provide rice for the displaced population.

  • Summary

In December 2023, with funding from Protestantse Gemeente Franeker and support from Philanthropy Connections Foundation (PCF), LWO delivered 70 sacks of rice, each weighing 50 kilograms, to sustain the 960 IDPs in the Lahu camp for two months. Despite ongoing conflict and military restrictions in the area, the rice was successfully transported and distributed to IDP families, ensuring their basic survival during this critical period.

  • Goals and Results

Goals: The project aimed to meet the immediate food needs of 960 Lahu IDPs by providing enough rice to support them for two months.

Results: A total of 70 sacks of rice were distributed to the camp, benefiting 960 IDPs, including vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, and people with disabilities. This support provided essential food security and alleviated the immediate threat of hunger for the displaced community.
